The senate committee on interior has increased the daily feeding allowance for Nigerian prison inmates from N450 to N1000 per day.
Note that Officials of the Nigerian correctional services NCS on Wednesday appeared before the senate to defend their 2022 budget.
The officials proposed a N750 daily feeding allowance increment for the inmates, but the panel who described the amount as grossly inadequate increased the allowance to N1000 in line with the economic reality.
The committee also promised to undertake an upward review of the inmates feeding allowance from N450 to N1000 per day.
Senator Betty Apiafi a member of the committee moved motion for the increment and she was massively supported by all members of the panel.
She opined that the N450 daily feeding allowance of the Nigerian inmates is grossly inadequate considering the high cost of things in the market now.
“You are dealing with adults, how do you aspect them to survive with such low amount? when you send convicts to prison, instead of reforming them, They became more hardened because of the way they are being treated.especially food”. Betty said.
The chairman of the committee also assured that the committee would make adquate provisions for the feeding of the inmates.
